The Veiled Christ

This famous and mysterious piece of art is located in the Chapel of San Severo, one of the most sacred and esoteric places in the ancient quarters of the city.

The story goes that the remarkably beautiful Veiled Christ, whom agonizing body covered by a transparent veil (made of marble!) will leave you breathless, is the result of an experiment carried out by the Prince of Sansevero who was known for his “marbling” alchemic studies which are visible on “The Bodies”, in the adjacent rooms of the Chapel.

Apparently, after carving the figure of Christ in marble, sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino - the author of the work - placed a real cloth veil on it and calcified it using a mystical formula provided by the prince.

Is it really a legend? Who knows! We invite you to judge for yourself and find out that all doubts… will remain unsolved.

The Chapel of San Severo and its Veiled Christ are just five-minutes walk from Attico 33.
